Unified Contract

05/03/2007

URGENT INFORMATION ON THE UNIFIED CONTRACT

Bircham Dyson Bell have now finished their detailed consideration of the Unified Contract for the Law Society. Their view is:

"Disregarding the personal, professional, commercial and other factors which will necessarily influence the judgement made by individual practitioners of the Contract, on purely legal grounds we would advise practitioners not to sign it."

Full details of their assessment of the contract, including a clause by clause critique, can be found here:

http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/documents/downloads/dynamic/summaryofunifiedcontract270207.pdf

The LSC will be publishing a number of documents today, including the draft specification which will replace the existing specification from

October 2007. HLPA would strongly recommend that you read that document before making your decision whether to sign this contract, as this will make fundamental changes to the terms on which you are working in six months' time. '

HLPA supports the views and work done by the Law Society and will keep members updated on any further developments.
